Pipe Cleaner Monogramming—

A Fun Way to Decorate Kids Rooms

Designing a textured monogram on canvas is a fun, creative and inexpensive project that children can do with a little help from adults.  Choosing colors to match their bedroom, children can create this unique art work that compliments any room.

Tools & Materials:

·         Pipe Cleaners

·         Craft Paper

·         12 x 12 inch standard canvas

·         Upholstering needle

·         Acrylic paint

·         Double stick tape

·         Standard print out paper

·         Computer

How to:
1

Print out a capital letter in any font (italic or bold) in the largest possible size to fit on an 8 ˝ by 11 inch paper.

2

Turn the paper over and rub with a #2 pencil back and forth until you have fully darkened an area covering the entire letter on the other side.

3

Attach double stick tape along the edges underneath the face of a 12 by 12 inch decorative craft paper sheet, place it on top of your canvas, and press down along the edges. (You will feel the hard wood edge beneath the canvas).

4

Paint the 4 sides of your canvas in a color that complements your craft paper and pipe cleaners using acrylic paint and let dry.

5

Center your paper print-out on top of the canvas face with the monogram letter facing up and trace the letter outline so that it gets transferred onto the craft paper below. (Do not press too hard to avoid stretching the canvas).

6

Make holes in your canvas (about 1/8” apart) along the outlines of your transferred letter using an upholstery needle.

7

Thread the pipe cleaners through the canvas starting underneath, pushing up through the hole toward you, looping around, and pushing down through the canvas until the pipe cleaner is just snug against the canvas face.  (Do not pull the pipe cleaner all the way through.  Bend the end of your pipe cleaner underneath the canvas in a 90 degree angle to secure.  Allow the loop to be slightly raised for best results.)
